The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has officially ruled the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge a drowning, with no signs of foul play.
Her body was discovered in April in a pool at the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen, Guyana. A postmortem examination confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
According to the GPF, the conclusion follows the final postmortem report submitted earlier this week by three internationally renowned pathologists.
The police said a comprehensive autopsy—including toxicology and DNA testing—was conducted. The results found no signs of acute injury or trauma. Toxicology showed ethanol levels consistent with postmortem decomposition, and both the sexual assault kit and DNA analysis for potential suspects were negative.
Additionally, the report noted that changes to Younge’s skin and airways were consistent with prolonged submersion and drowning. There was no evidence to suggest restraint, struggle, or that the body had been removed and returned.
The pathologists concluded that Younge drowned, likely sank to the bottom of the pool, and resurfaced later as a result of natural decomposition processes common in tropical climates.
Younge’s body was found on April 24, 2025, in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel. She had last been seen by her grandmother the previous day in the same pool. Her body was found floating the next morning.
The GPF said it launched a thorough investigation upon learning of the incident.
The child’s family raised several concerns, citing her swimming ability and suggesting possible sexual assault, forced drowning at another location, or ritualistic activity.
“These concerns were taken seriously and fully explored in collaboration with forensic experts,” the police said.
The certified autopsy findings confirmed the death was consistent with drowning, with no signs of trauma, assault, or any other criminal activity.
The results also align with an earlier report submitted by retired Canadian homicide investigator Leonard McCoshen, who found no evidence of foul play.
The police force said it is currently preparing the case file for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and legal guidance.
In its statement, the GPF extended its “heartfelt condolences” to the family of Adriana Younge and reiterated its commitment to transparency and justice.
