The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has confirmed that more than 7,000 polling stations will be operational across the country’s 63 constituencies for the upcoming general election on September 3.
“We intend to use in excess of a little over 7,250 polling stations to facilitate more than 50,000 personnel, including presiding officers, clerks, supervisors, and one-day police officers, who have been engaged to ensure a smooth voting process on Election Day,” Director of Elections Glasspole Brown said during a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) interview.
Mr. Brown emphasised the importance of voter compliance and order at polling stations. “We urge electors to follow the instructions of the presiding officers, remain calm and patient, and respect the secrecy of the ballot. The process must be conducted fairly and transparently for everyone,” he said.
Voters are reminded that polling stations will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m., but anyone in line before closing time will still be allowed to cast their vote.
The Director also stressed that polling stations are not spaces for campaigning. “The law does not allow for campaigning to take place. Therefore, you should not be encouraging anybody in the line to vote a particular way,” he noted.
Electors are further advised to follow all instructions issued by presiding officers, remain patient, and maintain proper conduct. The use of cell phones or other devices within polling stations is strictly prohibited to protect the secrecy of the vote.
While voters will not be denied entry if wearing party colours, Mr. Brown urged against clothing displaying slogans or images of candidates. “Our preference is that you come in a neutral colour; but you won’t be turned back if you wear your party colours. However, we urge you not to wear any garment that has any written slogans or photograph of a candidate on it,” he explained.
After voting, electors are encouraged to leave the premises promptly. “As soon as you enter the polling station and complete the process of voting, we urge electors to vacate the compound and return home or work and await the results in the afternoon,” Mr. Brown said.
The EOJ reassures Jamaicans that every measure has been taken to ensure a smooth and secure voting process, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic right with confidence.
