Dominican Republic moves toward unified policy on Haiti crisis

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – The Executive Committee of the Economic and Social Council (CES) held its first coordination meeting with government officials and representatives of former Dominican presidents Danilo Medina and Leonel Fernández, marking a key step in advancing a unified national approach to the Haitian crisis.

This session follows the landmark May 14 meeting between President Luis Abinader and former presidents Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Medina, where the leaders agreed to work together on a cohesive policy addressing the escalating situation in neighboring Haiti.

Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza confirmed that the official convocation of the CES would be issued the same day, with formal discussions set to begin on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the National Library.

Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of the crisis, Paliza said six thematic working groups will be established to focus on migration, bilateral trade, border development, national security, international relations, and labor. These groups aim to shape comprehensive strategies to safeguard national interests while responding to the evolving challenges on the shared island.
