The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem declared that the current TPS designation will expire on August 3, 2025, with the termination taking effect September 2, 2025.
Under U.S. immigration law, the Secretary of Homeland Security is required to review TPS designations at least 60 days prior to their expiration to determine whether the original conditions that warranted the protection still exist. Following consultations with relevant government agencies, Secretary Noem concluded that Haiti no longer meets the statutory requirements for TPS.
“This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary,” said a DHS spokesperson. “The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home. We encourage these individuals to take advantage of the Department’s resources in returning to Haiti, which can be arranged through the CBP Home app. Haitian nationals may pursue lawful status through other immigration benefit requests, if eligible.”
The determination followed a comprehensive assessment by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and consultations with the Department of State. Secretary Noem concluded that country conditions in Haiti have improved sufficiently to allow for the safe return of its nationals.
She also stated that continuing to permit Haitian nationals to remain in the U.S. on a temporary basis is “contrary to the national interest of the United States.”
As part of the wind-down process, Haitian nationals currently under TPS are encouraged to use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s CBP Home app to report their departure from the United States and to explore other avenues for lawful immigration status where eligible.
