Violence erupts at Central Bank in Haiti

Security forces in Haiti clashed with assailants attempting to breach the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) in Port-au-Prince on Monday, resulting in the death of at least three individuals.

The incident underscores the ongoing turmoil in the capital city, where armed gangs have held sway for the past three weeks.

Attack on key institution

The BRH, situated in the heart of Port-au-Prince’s business district, stands as one of the few operational bastions amidst the chaos engulfing the city.

Monday’s assault by what was described as a “group of criminals” was met with staunch resistance from the bank’s security personnel, along with the intervention of local law enforcement and armed forces.

Casualties and response

An employee of the bank, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that several assailants were killed in the attack, while a security guard sustained injuries from gunfire.

The BRH, in a statement posted on social media, lauded the swift and effective response of security forces and expressed gratitude towards its guards and law enforcement for their unwavering commitment to community protection.

Escalating violence and international response

Haiti has been gripped by a surge in gang violence, triggered by a daring prison raid that saw the release of thousands of inmates.

The ensuing unrest, coupled with demands for Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation, prompted international pressure and ultimately led to Henry’s agreement to step aside for an interim government.

Humanitarian crisis deepens

The United Nations’ children’s agency, UNICEF, painted a dire picture of the humanitarian situation in Haiti, likening it to a dystopian landscape akin to scenes from “Mad Max.”

Reports of famine and malnutrition underscore the urgent need for assistance, with aid groups facing significant hurdles in delivering aid to those in need.

Security measures and evacuations

Against this backdrop of escalating violence and humanitarian crisis, authorities have extended a curfew in the Ouest department until Wednesday, with a state of emergency slated to conclude on April 3rd.

Diplomatic missions from the United States and European Union member states have evacuated personnel from Haiti in response to the deteriorating security situation.

International support efforts

Efforts to bolster Haiti’s overwhelmed police force are underway, with plans in motion to deploy a security mission from Nairobi to provide much-needed assistance in restoring order amidst the chaos gripping the nation.
