The chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, Jason Smith is leading a bipartisan congressional delegation (CODEL) to Guyana, the US Embassy said on Friday.
It said that the delegation, which also includes Democrat Terri Sewell and Republicans Carol Miller, Michelle Fischbach, Beth Van Duyne, Mike Carey (R-OH), and Kelly Armstrong would meet with government officials and opposition leaders to discuss issues related to governance, economic matters, and the importance of bipartisan cooperation.
“They will meet with prominent business leaders from the United States and Guyana to learn firsthand about Guyana’s exponential economic growth. The CODEL visit seeks to further examine the bilateral and economic cooperation between the United States and Guyana,” the Embassy said.
The House Committee on Ways and Means is the oldest committee of the United States Congress and is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. Since 1795, the committee has exercised jurisdiction over revenue and related issues such as tariffs, international trade policy, and the bonded debt of the United States.
The visit by the members of the US Congress follows that of a delegation representing Vice President Kamala Harris that discussed matters of climate change, energy security, and agriculture.
They held talks with the government, opposition, the private sector, and non-governmental organization. The discussions focused on governance, security, and prosperity.
