The Belize Ministry of Health and Wellness is urging residents to remain vigilant following a rise in measles cases linked to international travel and recently identified infections within the country.
Health officials in Belize confirmed that eight measles cases have been recorded since the beginning of 2026, with additional suspected cases currently under review. Authorities said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely while strengthening national surveillance and response measures.
The ministry warned that unvaccinated individuals — particularly those living in or travelling through border communities — face a higher risk of infection.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through direct contact. Health officials stressed that the illness can be especially serious for children under five.
Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that begins on the face before spreading across the body. Symptoms may appear between seven and 21 days after exposure.
The ministry is advising anyone who believes they may have been exposed to contact the nearest health centre or call its hotline at 0-800-MOH-CARE (0-800-664-2273) for guidance. Residents experiencing fever and rash symptoms are also being urged to seek medical attention promptly and call ahead where possible before visiting a clinic.
Health authorities said they are working closely with regional and international partners to contain the spread of the disease and prevent further infections.
Officials reiterated the importance of vaccination as the most effective protection against measles, as public health teams continue response efforts across affected areas.
