The United States Department of State has announced that Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, will embark on a diplomatic visit to Kingston, Jamaica, and Belmopan, Belize, from February 19-23.
During her stay in Kingston, Zeya aims to reaffirm the robust partnership between the United States and Jamaica.
Her agenda includes high-level discussions with senior government officials to bolster cooperation in areas such as civilian security, law enforcement, human rights, and the rule of law.
She will meet with close partners to engage on the Haiti Multinational Security Support mission, the State Department said.
Supporting vulnerable populations
Zeya will also take the opportunity to commemorate the inauguration of a “Child Friendly Space,” a significant initiative under the US-Jamaica Child Protection Compact Partnership.
This initiative is designed to offer safety and assistance to children who have been affected by or witnessed crimes.
Moreover, she is expected to engage with educators and young people to explore avenues for strengthening family and community capacities to combat youth violence.
Addressing regional security challenges in Belize
Following her visit to Jamaica, Zeya will head to Belmopan, Belize, where she will engage with key stakeholders including senior government officials, civil society representatives, and human rights advocates.
Discussions will focus on bilateral and regional security issues, with particular emphasis on enhancing safe, orderly, and humane migration management, combating human trafficking, countering discrimination, and safeguarding the fundamental freedoms of vulnerable groups.
