President Chandrikapersad Santokhi affirmed Suriname’s commitment to its CARICOM sister state, expressing intent to deploy a police mission under Kenya’s leadership.

Urgency of assistance

President Santokhi underscored the urgent need for assistance in Haiti, highlighting the alarming mortality rates eclipsing even those of global conflict zones.

He emphasized the inadequacy of international aid reaching the beleaguered nation, drawing attention to the daily toll from natural disasters and societal upheaval.

Multifaceted support approach

Addressing the complexity of Haiti’s crisis, President Santokhi advocated for a multi-tiered approach to support, emphasizing international, regional, and bilateral cooperation.

He cited the United Nations Security Council’s resolution endorsing an international police presence in Haiti as a pivotal step towards addressing the country’s security challenges.

Collaborative preparedness

Suriname’s commitment to aiding Haiti extends beyond rhetoric, with government officials actively collaborating with domestic security forces to prepare personnel for deployment.

President Santokhi stressed the importance of comprehensive training for delegates earmarked for the mission, prioritizing readiness and efficacy in assisting Haiti.

Solidarity amidst uncertainty

In a poignant appeal for solidarity, President Santokhi reminded stakeholders of the interconnectedness of nations and the potential for mutual assistance in times of need.

He urged a collective response to Haiti’s plight, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of international cooperation.

Haiti’s ongoing struggle

Haiti continues to grapple with political instability and social unrest following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

Rampant gang violence exacerbates the country’s challenges, prompting a significant exodus of citizens and humanitarian agencies from affected areas.

Path to recovery

Amidst the chaos, Haiti endeavors to establish a transitional council tasked with facilitating democratic elections by 2025.

The council’s mandate aims to restore stability and chart a course towards a more equitable and prosperous future for the embattled nation.
