A daring individual’s impulsive leap off the iconic Simpson-Bay Bridge in St Maarten ignited a joint operation by the police force and the Coast Guard.
Authorities are now cautioning the public against engaging in such perilous acts.
Risky bridge dive sparks swift action
The police force said in conjunction with the Coast Guard, it responded to an incident on Thursday afternoon involving a man who jumped off the Simpson-Bay Bridge near the Coast Guard and Police stations.
Reports are that central dispatch received a call from an observant police officer stationed in Simpson-Bay, who reported a man seen jumping off the bridge into the perilous waterway and boat lane between the lagoon and the sea.
Immediate response and search operation
This prompted an immediate response from officers and members of the Coast Guard, who searched for the individual.
Despite their extensive efforts, fraught with uncertainty and the looming possibility of tragedy, the search initially proved fruitless.
However, later in the afternoon, Technological resources revealed an unexpected turn of events—several hundred feet downstream, the individual had managed to make his way out of the water.
The man was confronted by a police officer from Simpson-Bay, who reprimanded him for his reckless and unwarranted behavior.
