In a declaration on Sunday, Jamaica’s Peoples National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding asserted his readiness to take legal action if Prime Minister Andrew Holness fails to schedule the local government election by the end of next month.
The Jamaican Government recently amended the law to extend the tenure of councilors, a move that has sparked significant controversy.
The last local government general elections were conducted on November 28, 2016, which means that what was initially a three-year term of office for councilors has now been extended to over seven years for those currently in office.
Postponements lead to upcoming deadline
With numerous postponements, the upcoming local government elections are now set to take place by the end of February, raising concerns among opposition leaders.
Mark Golding, the PNP President, firmly opposes any further extensions of the local government election timeline.
