The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honorable Gaston Browne, made an official visit to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday, July 19th.
The visit was arranged in collaboration with the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, who he met.
Topics on the meeting’s agenda
Discussions were focused on the protection of the oceans and the environment as a universal cultural asset of humanity, and the promotion of exchanges and partnerships between countries for education, particularly international university student exchanges.
Topics discussed also included the improvement of access to information technologies (in particular the possibility of connection); an essential cultural and educational vector for developing States or with geographical particularities (small sizes, insularity, etc.);
The visit was organized on the initiative of H.E. Boris Latour, Ambassador Extraordinary, and Plenipotentiary, recently appointed as Permanent Delegate of Antigua and Barbuda to UNESCO in Paris.

Antigua and Barbuda’s PM to visit UNESCO on Wednesday
During the visit, Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed his complete trust in the new Ambassador H.E. Boris Latour, who will be representing Antigua and Barbuda at UNESCO. He also emphasized the role’s significance due to the numerous high-priority matters concerning the nation.
The discussion between the Prime Minister and the Director-General also highlighted the establishment of capacity building in Antigua and Barbuda. The aim is to safeguard and monitor the country’s cultural heritage, as well as enhance the education infrastructure and human resources in connection with new technologies and artificial intelligence.
The Prime Minister further said, “It is very important for each country to be autonomous in matters of information technology, especially in relation to the development of artificial intelligence, and the institutions of multilateral diplomacy which have a crucial role to play in this area, in particular, UNESCO”.
Regarding the visit’s objective, the Antigua and Barbuda government, through the Prime Minister, provided a definite directive to Ambassador Boris Latour. He has been tasked to leverage his exceptional skills and extensive professional experience to act confidently on the country’s behalf.

Other dignitaries who attended the meeting included H.E. Colin Murdoch, the Ambassador of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to the World Trade Organization and other international organizations based in Geneva, and Timothée Bauer, the Deputy Permanent Delegate for Antigua and Barbuda.
