Ellis faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravation.

Gayle, 77, was discovered inside her home on December 17 with multiple stab wounds. The following day, her car, a GLA 180 Mercedes Benz, was recovered near Dyke Road in St. Catherine. Ellis was apprehended on December 18 in Grange Lane, where he was reportedly found hiding in bushes.

According to a report by Radio Jamaica, Ellis confessed to the killing while providing a caution statement to detectives from the Criminal Investigations Branch.

He told investigators he killed the veteran journalist for her GLA 180 Mercedes Benz motor vehicle that had been parked in her yard at the Caymanas Country Club Estate housing scheme in St. Catherine. He said he had planned to sell the vehicle.

Ellis was then charged with murder and robbery with aggravation.

The murder of the veteran journalist, known for her dedication to the field, has shocked the nation and sparked widespread outrage.

Former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson described the brutal murder of veteran journalist Barbara Gayle as a “wake-up call” for Jamaica, urging the nation to reexamine its values and prioritize those that are “life-sustaining.”

In a statement, Patterson remembered Gayle as “gentle, modest, and conscientious,” and urged Jamaicans to reflect on the values that sustain life. “This heinous act should prompt a national effort to end such despicable crimes,” he said, warning that failure to act would leave the nation increasingly vulnerable.
