Jamaica recognizes State of Palestine

In a move signaling its commitment to global diplomacy and peace efforts, Jamaica has officially recognized the State of Palestine.

According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Tuesday, this decision, confirmed by portfolio minister, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, comes after careful deliberations by the Cabinet.

Advocating for peace

Senator Johnson Smith emphasized that Jamaica’s recognition of Palestine underscores its steadfast support for a two-state solution to the enduring Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

By endorsing this solution, Jamaica aims to ensure the security of Israel while upholding the dignity and rights of Palestinians.

This stance aligns with the country’s long-standing advocacy for peaceful resolutions to international conflicts.

Upholding international principles

The decision also reflects Jamaica’s adherence to the principles outlined in the Charter of the United Nations.

Senator Johnson Smith highlighted the importance of mutual respect, peaceful co-existence among nations, and the recognition of peoples’ right to self-determination as fundamental pillars of Jamaica’s foreign policy.

Humanitarian concerns in gaza

Contextualizing the decision, Senator Johnson Smith reiterated Jamaica’s deep concerns regarding the ongoing war in Gaza and the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Jamaica advocates for diplomatic dialogue as the pathway to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the need to prioritize humanitarian aid and ceasefire efforts.

A call for diplomatic solutions

Jamaica’s support for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased access to humanitarian aid underscores its commitment to mitigating the suffering of civilians, particularly women and children, in Gaza.

Senator Johnson Smith urged all parties to consider the grave consequences of further conflict and to commit to diplomatic avenues for lasting peace.

Joining global consensus

With this decision, Jamaica joins 140 other Member States of the United Nations in recognizing the State of Palestine.

This move not only reinforces Jamaica’s commitment to international diplomacy but also signifies its solidarity with efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
