A 59-year-old Haitian-American national found himself at the center of a harrowing legal ordeal in Belize.
Robert Joseph, the accused, faced the Belmopan Magistrates Court on charges of two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Joseph was denied bail, due to the nature of the offense, and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Tragic loss and injury
The incident, which unfolded at the Belmopan Market Day Plaza, resulted in the tragic deaths of Laura Fiorito, 40, and eight-year-old Megan Klessan.
Additionally, two other minors sustained injuries in the shooting, while Fiorito’s common-law husband narrowly escaped harm as bullets flew indiscriminately.
Shocking scenes captured on social media
The aftermath of the shooting was captured in a disturbing video circulating on social media.
The footage depicted a scene of chaos and horror, with a woman lying motionless on the ground and a young girl injured in the back of a pickup truck.
Background of the victims
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Suzette Anderson, shed light on the background of the victims, revealing that they hailed from the Netherlands and had been residing in Belize.
Further investigations unveiled Joseph’s ties to the community, indicating his residency in Belize and his purported ownership of a resort in the Belmopan area.
