The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has welcomed the recent ruling by the High Court.
The ruling, recently issued, temporarily prevents the government’s plans to cut the salaries of teachers participating in a national strike and prevents the automatic deduction of union membership dues.
A respite for teachers
GTU President, Dr. Mark Lyte, hailed the court’s decision as a pivotal moment in their ongoing battle for fair treatment.
Dr. Lyte emphasized that the court’s intervention compels the government to reverse its directive to cut salaries and to reinstate the deducted union dues into the system.
Ongoing dispute
The High Court granted the orders on the 14th day of the industrial action by the teachers and ahead of the full hearing and determination of the substantive matters on March 20.
Dr. Lyte affirmed the GTU’s commitment to safeguard teachers from victimization or undue suffering.
