Loop News- The streets of Guyana were abuzz with activity today as candidates competing in the June 12 Local Government Election submitted their nomination papers at Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) offices.
So far, only the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), and The Citizenship Initiative (TCI) have nominated candidates for the election.
The Alliance For Change (AFC), which is a coalition partner in Parliament with the APNU, is boycotting the elections due to their concerns about the voters’ list, which they said is bloated and gives the PPP/C an unfair advantage.
Other parties are skipping the election due to issues with financing their campaign.
Both the PPP/C and APNU are expected to contest all of the over 70 Local Authority Areas (LAAs).
There were a few surprises during the nomination process as some prominent APNU supporters crossed the political divide to join the PPP/C. Former Mayor of Georgetown Patricia Chase-Green was one of the defectors who was listed as a PPP/C candidate.
The PPP/C won the last Local Government Election with over 61 per cent of the votes. APNU came second with 34 per cent of the votes.
