Guyana has pledged to contribute a substantial sum of USD$150,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The Caribbean nation’s commitment aims to provide assistance to Palestinians who have been displaced and adversely affected by the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Ongoing Conflict’s grim toll
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023, has had devastating consequences, claiming the lives of more than 25,000 people.
The situation remains a pressing concern on the global stage, with Guyana and other nations striving for a peaceful resolution to this prolonged and tragic conflict.
A strong international appeal
Guyanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that its decision to support UNRWA resonates with its call for a more robust international response to the persisting crisis in Gaza.
As an elected member of the United Nations Security Council, Guyana is actively advocating for a ceasefire that would facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-torn region.
Consistent support over the years
Guyana said it has consistently provided financial aid to UNRWA over the years.
UNRWA serves as the primary humanitarian organization that offers vital support to over 2 million Palestinians.

The government of Guyana envisions a brighter future for both Palestinians and Israelis, one free from the constant shadows of war.
The country added that it is prepared to work as a member of the UN Security Council and with the entire UN membership to accelerate the vision of two independent states living side by side in peace and security and of a peaceful Middle East.
