The Eastern Caribbean Currency Union’s Monetary Council has given its approval for the issuance of a commemorative $50 note to celebrate Grenada’s 50th anniversary of independence.
Grenada is set to mark its 50th anniversary on February 7, 2024.
Last month, Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, announced that, as part of the nation’s golden jubilee celebrations, the government had approached the ECCB, requesting the printing of commemorative 50-dollar notes.
Expected circulation of the special banknote
Following the conclusion of the meeting, the Monetary Council released a communique stating that the commemorative notes are expected to enter circulation during the second half of the year.
However, the specific number of notes to be printed was not disclosed.
Prime Minister’s optimism: The significance of the 50th-anniversary celebrations
Expressing optimism about the response to Grenada’s request, Prime Minister Mitchell previously shared that the celebrations for the 50th anniversary would officially commence in September 2023 and extend throughout the entire year of 2024.
