Suriname has signed an agreement with China for the upgrading and expansion of the “Safe City” security camera system that has been set up in a number of streets and strategic public locations in the capital.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras will now be installed in all other districts, with the exception of the Sipaliwini district in the interior of Suriname. The project will be carried out by experienced technicians from China. The donation of US$15 million will finance, among other things, the installation of equipment and construction of the facilities.
The agreement was signed on Thursday at the Chinese embassy by Minister of Justice and Police Kenneth Amoksi and Chinese Ambassador, Han Jing. The Safe City 3 project is part of the China Aid Road Monitoring Project in Suriname and Amoksi said will give the police more scope to investigate criminal offences.
He said installing cameras on public roads that have already been identified will allow the Command Center to analyze images from many more public locations and that hotspots have already been identified in the districts where facilities will be located.
Amoks called the contribution of Safe City 1 and 2 enormous and said it will become even greater with the continuation of the project, adding that information is key urging the members of the population for their cooperation.
The Chinese Ambassador said the agreement is a gesture of support to the Surinamese government for increasing public safety. He said Safe City plays an important role in maintaining public safety in China.
The diplomat also said China wants to share knowledge and experience by introducing its technology in Suriname.
“We believe that the Surinamese community will benefit greatly from the project,” he added.
