Jarion Richardson, the Leader of the Opposition and head of the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), has announced that he will resign from both roles effective September 6, 2025, citing the personal and political weight of leadership and a desire to make way for new energy within the party.
In a detailed public letter released on Saturday, Richardson said the decision followed “long reflection” on the demands of political life, especially in an environment where the government holds a supermajority. While he will step down from his leadership roles, he confirmed that he will remain the elected Member of Parliament for Paget West.
“When I first accepted the role of Party Leader and Opposition Leader in August 2023, I spoke about principled conduct, community problem-solving, and the dangers of cynicism in our politics,” Richardson wrote. “I still believe that.”
Richardson’s tenure has been marked by efforts to restore the relevance and effectiveness of Bermuda’s political opposition. He described the period as one of “unprecedented institutional imbalance,” noting that the OBA had to work quickly and systematically—not simply to oppose the government, but to rebuild democratic opposition itself.
Under his leadership, the OBA launched what Richardson called “the most comprehensive internal reform and policy development process the party has seen.” This included public town halls, platform development, and outreach efforts aimed at engaging voters beyond partisan lines.
“We presented the public with substance, not slogans,” he said. “Our reforms have allowed us an opportunity for a planned and principled leadership transition, marking our institutional maturity. That is something worth celebrating.”
Though Richardson did not cite any specific controversy or crisis behind the timing of his resignation, he emphasized the toll leadership has taken on his personal life. “Leadership practically carries a real weight. It touches every corner of one’s life—family, health, friendships, and peace,” he noted, thanking his colleagues and family for their support over the past two years.
His announcement paves the way for the party to begin selecting a successor. It’s unclear whether a new leader will be in place by the time he steps down in September, but Richardson expressed confidence in the party’s readiness for a smooth transition.
“The political fight in Bermuda is for the future of this country. For its ability to govern itself fairly. For its young people to see politics as a calling, not a performance,” he wrote.
Richardson, who also serves as a Justice of the Peace, reaffirmed his commitment to public service, saying he would continue to work as an MP and advocate for better governance. “Government is not for preening or settling scores,” he added. “Government is for education, infrastructure, and public trust.”
The OBA, once Bermuda’s governing party, has been working to regain ground after significant losses in recent elections. Richardson’s resignation marks a pivotal moment for the party as it attempts to rebrand and rebuild ahead of the next general election.
No candidates to replace Richardson have been publicly confirmed as of Sunday.
