Belize to launch new banknotes on August 4

The Central Bank of Belize is set to usher in a new era of currency, officially confirming that the long-anticipated 2025 banknote series will enter circulation on August 4, 2025.

This follows an earlier delay in the release, as previously reported by HOTP, which pushed the launch to early August.

The new banknotes feature enhanced security elements, updated design themes, and fresh portraits that celebrate Belize’s cultural and historical heritage — all while maintaining the current fixed exchange rate of BZ$2 to US$1.

Governor Kareem Michael emphasized the Central Bank’s commitment to a seamless rollout. “We have worked diligently to ensure a smooth and secure rollout. We want every citizen to feel confident using the new banknotes,” he said.

Since unveiling the redesigned currency in January, the Central Bank has conducted extensive outreach efforts, engaging schools, businesses, financial institutions, and the general public through education and awareness campaigns aimed at familiarizing Belizeans with the updated notes.

On launch day, the new banknotes will be available for exchange at all domestic banks. However, the Central Bank noted that not all ATMs will immediately dispense the updated currency, as reconfiguration of these machines is still underway. ATM rollout is expected to follow shortly after.

The current series of banknotes will remain legal tender for the time being. Nevertheless, the Central Bank is encouraging the public to begin depositing older notes at their banks to support a gradual and orderly phase-out from circulation.

The Central Bank expressed its appreciation to the public for their ongoing cooperation during the transition.
