The Ministry of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs, in partnership with the National Commission for Families and Children (NCFC), has issued a joint statement condemning all acts of sexual violence against children in Belize.
The statement comes amid recent reports of disturbing assaults involving both boys and girls, which have sparked public outrage and renewed calls for action to protect the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
Specifically, Belize’s former Ambassador to Cuba, Said Badi Guerra, was granted bail last Thursday after appearing before the magistrate’s court in Benque Viejo del Carmen on multiple serious charges, including sexual assault involving a male minor.
“Sexual violence against children is a grave violation of their rights, dignity, and well-being,” the release said. “It causes lifelong trauma and undermines the very fabric of our society. Such acts are unacceptable under any circumstances and must never be excused or minimized, regardless of the alleged perpetrator’s social, political, or professional standing.”
The Ministry and NCFC are calling on law enforcement to conduct immediate and thorough investigations into all allegations of child sexual abuse, and on the judiciary to issue timely and appropriate sentences that reflect the seriousness of such crimes. They also urged families, communities, and individuals to speak out, report suspected abuse, and support survivors.
“No individual – whether an ordinary citizen or a high-ranking official – is above the law,” the statement emphasized. “Perpetrators of sexual violence against children must face the full weight of justice.”

The agencies also appealed to the media and public to report responsibly, with sensitivity to survivors’ identities and dignity.
