Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a sobering warning about the rise in youth violence across the Caribbean, calling it an “existential threat” following the murder of a teenage national cricketer last week.
The body of 16-year-old Vonde Bowers, a fourth-form student at Ottos Comprehensive School, was discovered last Friday in a gutter in the Grays Farm area. Authorities confirmed that he had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, head, and other areas. According to media reports, Bowers was fatally stabbed during an altercation involving several young men. He had recently returned from a tour of the United Kingdom, where he represented the Antigua and Barbuda Under-19 cricket team.
No arrests have yet been made.
In a statement on Wednesday, Prime Minister Browne expressed deep sadness over Bowers’ death, describing the teen as a promising talent whose life was cut short before he could fully contribute to nation-building.
“The issue of youth violence is now an existential threat facing the Caribbean region,” Browne said. “This is a matter occupying the attention of my government as we work to strengthen our anti-violence and conflict resolution initiatives.”
The prime minister emphasized that government efforts alone would not be enough to tackle the crisis. He called for a collective response, starting with more intentional parenting and support within households.
“An all-of-society approach is required to address this threat effectively,” he said. “Our church leaders, teachers, community leaders, parents—all stakeholders—are required to play their role in resolving this threat to our development and quality of life.”
Browne extended his condolences to Bowers’ family and reiterated the need for urgent, unified action to stem the tide of youth violence threatening communities across the region.
