Top 3 Most Visited Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean has many popular and beautiful islands. Its scenic landscapes grace the covers of vacation magazines and the reels of the most traveled influencers. Millions of tourists visit the region every year, either for the first time or to make a repeat excursion, soaking up the food, fun, and culture of the islands.

Tourism is the lifeblood of the region. It’s the main income-earning industry across most, if not all, Caribbean islands. To be among the most visited islands is to stand out as paradise above paradise. It’s rarefied air.

Here are three of the most visited islands in the Caribbean.

Dominican Republic

At the top of the list is the Dominican Republic (DR). In 2022, over 8.5 million tourists visited the island, making it not only the most popular destination in the Caribbean, but a top five tourist spot within North, Central, and South America. The DR has it all, boasting one of the most diverse geographies in the region. For thrill-seekers and nature lovers, Pico Duarte is the tallest mountain peak in the region and Lake Enriquillo is the largest lake.

For history buffs, the DR’s Colonial Zone is a time capsule to an age long gone. Visitors can explore the first cathedral, monastery, and fortress ever to be built in all of the Americas. Millions flock to the country to experience the naval museums and see the relics from the first European incursion into the Americas, especially The Alcázar de Colón, the colonial palace of the infamous and controversial explorer Christopher Columbus.

Puerto Rico

The runner-up for the most visited Caribbean island is Puerto Rico, which boasts over five million visitors, a strong bounceback from the pandemic years, and a welcome respite from the recent turmoil inflicted by hurricanes Maria and Fiona. Spearheaded by the Destination Marketing Organisation, Discover Puerto Rico, the island has put its best foot forward in enticing tourists far and wide with its natural beauty and unique culture.

The “Live Boricua” campaign launched last year has been especially successful. Puerto Ricans call themselves Boricuas, based on the indigenous name of the island Borinquen. The campaign put the local flavor on full display, highlighting musicians, culinary experiences, and tourist-focused adventures; everything from the aquatic adventures to be had at El Periquito Waterfall, to the Callejon in Old San Juan where cobblestone streets always lead to dinners and parties.

Jamaica

In many ways, Jamaica has become the face of the Caribbean. The country’s cultural impact can be felt around the world, thanks to its unique penchant for churning out notable figures across music, athletics, and art. The country’s Minister of Tourism, Honorable Edmund Bartlett, testified to the tourism numbers being ahead of schedule in 2023. This year, Jamaica is poised to reach 11 percent visitor arrivals growth compared with figures from 2022.

In 2022, Jamaica saw around 2.5 million visitors, just short of its population of 2.8 million. This was an increase of 60% year over year and approaching pre-pandemic numbers. The country has been celebrated not only for the resiliency of its tourism sector, but also for implementing a pension scheme for tourism workers that Minister Bartlett has called potentially life-changing.

Visitors to Jamaica are able to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and the classic landmarks such as the Bob Marley Museum. They also visit to attend multiple events returning from the pandemic’s enforced hiatus, such as the JAMROCK Reggae Cruise and the Reggae Marathon.
