The incidence of mental health issues has risen throughout the community, prompting concerns, especially for the youth.

Addressing mental health stigma

During a mental health forum at the Jewel Grande Resort in Montego Bay on May 30, Dr. Longmore, who specializes in psychiatry, voiced her concerns about the stigma surrounding mental health.

She pointed out that such stigma not only exacerbates the challenges faced by individuals but also hinders them from seeking necessary help.

The call for societal change

Highlighting the urgent need for a cultural shift towards a more empathetic approach, Dr. Longmore called on community leaders, policymakers, and the public to elevate mental health awareness and initiate supportive actions.

By cultivating a compassionate environment, the society can better include and assist those facing mental health challenges.

The importance of safe spaces

Dr. Longmore stressed the need to eradicate the stigma associated with mental health and to create environments where individuals feel safe to seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination.

She emphasized the critical role of continued focus on mental health in educational settings and the broader community to ensure the well-being of all citizens.
