Broward Health North marked a significant milestone in cardiac care with the opening of its brand-new, 11,600-square-foot cardiac catheterization suite, designed to increase access to advanced electrophysiology (EP) services in northern Broward County.
Hospital officials, physicians, and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the expansion, which adds two cutting-edge catheterization labs to the facility. The labs, equipped with the latest imaging and diagnostic technology, bring the hospital’s total to three cath labs and reflect a strategic investment in Broward Health’s growing cardiovascular service line.
“This development aligns with our long-term vision to build a cardiac service line of excellence and deliver leading-edge care throughout the communities we serve,” said Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health. “It highlights the system’s investment in cardiac innovation, clinical capacity and population health.”
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Florida and one of the top causes of mortality in Broward County, according to health officials. With cardiac rhythm disorders on the rise—particularly atrial fibrillation (Afib), a leading cause of stroke—hospital leaders say the new suite is both timely and necessary.
“Our investment in cardiac services enables us to continue providing extraordinary cardiac care to meet the evolving needs of our growing community,” said Matt Garner, CEO of Broward Health North.
For the first time, Broward Health North will offer onsite cardiac ablation procedures, including complex left- and right-sided ablations for arrhythmias. The new suite also includes six patient prep and recovery areas, a nursing station, and space for future expansion, including an additional EP lab.
“The ability to offer complex ablation procedures onsite allows us to deliver a full spectrum of care without requiring patient transfers or delays,” said Dr. Jose Baez-Escudero, chief of cardiology and electrophysiology for the Broward Health Physician Group.
Strategically located next to the Emergency Department, the new lab enhances rapid triage and intervention for acute cardiac patients—a factor that can significantly impact clinical outcomes.
“The proximity to the ED enhances care coordination and allows for rapid triage and treatment of patients presenting with acute cardiac symptoms,” said Dr. Andre Landau, medical director of cardiology at Broward Health North.
