Vybz Kartel’s crowning the highlight of Reggae Sumfest Night One

Reggae Sumfest 2025 kicked off its first night with a potent mix of high-octane performances, emotional milestones, and a moment of sheer pandemonium as Dancehall Night unfolded in front of thousands at Catherine Hall. The evening, anchored by a symbolic crowning of Vybz Kartel as the official “King of Dancehall”, was as thrilling as it was tumultuous.

The highly anticipated moment, led by Spice, Sumfest’s previously crowned “Queen of Dancehall,” was nearly derailed when a sudden stampede broke out just before the ceremonial crowning. Chaos erupted in pockets of the crowd, sending frightened patrons scrambling and temporarily disrupting what was meant to be a celebratory moment. Security quickly moved to restore order, and the show resumed.

Clad in the official Jamaica Football Federation kit, Vybz Kartel emerged in spectacular form and was met with deafening cheers from the audience. Despite the tension earlier, his performance united the crowd in unison as they shouted lyrics word-for-word, reaffirming his iconic status in the dancehall landscape.

Beyond Kartel’s historic coronation, the night belonged to a strong roster of dancehall stars who delivered both fiery sets and personal highlights.

Masicka delivered a commanding performance but stirred concern when he told fans, “This might be my last Sumfest.” In a show of solidarity, he also gave stage time to rising artist Jamal, who had missed his scheduled slot earlier in the night. The gesture earned applause from fans and fellow artists alike. Skeng, ever the showman, appeared in a full Joker-inspired costume, bringing his signature high energy and theatrical antics to the Sumfest stage. His set was one of the most visually captivating of the night.

Shaniel Muir, the lone female act on the bill, shone brightly—both literally and figuratively—in a dazzling gold ensemble. Her performance of “Yamabella” ignited the crowd, reminding everyone that female dancehall is alive and thriving.
In one of the night’s most touching moments, Govanna wrapped up his stellar performance by bringing his mother on stage, surprising her with the keys to a brand new Honda CR-V SUV. The emotional reveal earned roars from the crowd and praise across social media.

Despite these shining highlights, the night was not without issues. Long wait times at the entry gates frustrated early patrons, and a total of three stampedes disrupted different segments of the event, raising concerns about crowd management and general logistics.

While Night One had no shortage of iconic moments, the operational missteps have left fans and critics alike hoping for a smoother experience moving forward. International Night is set to unfold tonight, with R&B superstar Toni Braxton headlining the stage alongside reggae and roots legends. All eyes are now on the festival’s ability to rebound and refocus.

With momentum still on its side and an undeniable showcase of talent, Reggae Sumfest 2025 is far from over—and if the passion of Night One is any indicator, the best may still be to come.
