Coordinators of the awards show said they were honoring Marley because of his contributions to the country’s musical history, which has led to local music genres such as Zim dancehall; and also because Marley gave Zimbabwe a de facto anthem in his 1979 song, Zimbabwe.

The late reggae legend is acknowledged for also supporting Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence and touring the country in 1980 to perform at their first Independence Day celebrations.

The award will be presented to Marley’s family members.
