A recent University of Michigan study reveals alarming levels of arsenic and cadmium in US rice exports to Haiti, raising concerns about public health in the country.
US Dominance in Haiti’s rice market
US rice imports constitute a significant portion of Haiti’s staple supply.
The country is among the top buyers of rice from the US, alongside Mexico and Japan, and cheap imports are more affordable than local options in the Caribbean nation.
The study reveals that the average arsenic and cadmium concentrations were nearly twice as high in imported rice, compared to the Haitian-grown product, with some imported samples exceeding international limits.
