The Caribbean is set to benefit from a new initiative aimed at slashing its food import bill by a quarter by the year 2025.
A special fund of US$250,000 has been established to support this ambitious goal, enhancing the region’s food and nutritional security.
Strategic initiatives for sustainable development
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) announced the creation of this Special Fund for the Caribbean.
This move is designed to bolster efforts across the region to become more self-reliant in food production.
By reducing dependency on imported food, the fund will play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices within the Caribbean.
Enhancing regional cooperation
IICA Director General Manuel Otero highlighted the broader implications of the fund, noting its role in fostering greater integration among Caribbean nations.
The fund will support various hemispheric partnerships and projects that are part of South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives.
These efforts are not only aimed at securing food supplies but also at enhancing the quality of life for people throughout the Caribbean.
This strategic focus underscores a deepening commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term challenges faced by the region in achieving food self-sufficiency.
