Here are some favorite Caribbean cuisines outlined by Southern Living that you’ve got to try:

  1. Barbados: Coucou and Flying Fish

You can’t travel to Barbados or visit a restaurant and not try their national dish. The island, which is referred to as “The Land of the Flying Fish,” steams the fish with cooked with onions, spices, and vegetables, and served on a bed of polenta-like cornmeal; or fried and served with a spicy sauce. This is one you can’t miss out on.

  1. Bahamas: Conch Fritters

Imagine a scrumptious crabcake with a touch of the Caribbean, that’s Conch fritters. Although this Caribbean dish is common in other islands, you have to try conch fritters from Bahamas. These are made from a batter containing onion, bell pepper, spices, chili, or celery and then deep-fried. While different restaurants and families may have their recipes, it’s scrumptious just the same.

  1. Jamaica: Jerk Chicken

Jerk is a signature flavor of Jamaica. Though it’s not a part of the island’s national dish, it’s well-loved by many. Jerk is a method of cooking in which chicken or other meat, is dry-rubbed or wet-marinated with a spice blend that has the ideal combination of flavors before being smoked or grilled. The meal is offered everywhere on the island, from upscale resorts to beachside shacks, and possibly the restaurant near you!

  1. Dominican Republic: La Bandera

La Bandera is one of the most popular dishes in the Dominican Republic. This vibrant feast comprises rice, red beans, meat, and salad. The connection between this lunch and the national flag shows how important food is to the island’s national identity. Don’t forget to sample the La Bandera the next time you have the chance to eat food in the Dominican Republic.
