Jamaican recently appointed to Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers

US President Joe Biden recently appointed C Kirabo Jackson to his Council of Economic Advisers. Jackson has notable Caribbean roots: his father is Jamaican, and his mother is from Trinidad and Tobago.

His father, Clement Jackson, held the pioneering role as the first director of the Planning Institute of Jamaica. 

His mother, June Jackson has made notable academic contributions as a lecturer at the University of Technology.

Distinguished academic and research career

The White House’s statement highlighted Jackson’s distinguished academic career. He holds the title of Abraham Harris Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University.

Furthermore, Jackson is a Professor of Economics, and his influence extends to his roles at the Institute for Policy Research and the National Bureau of Economic Research. 

In the realm of academic publications, Jackson’s current leadership role is the Editor-In-Chief of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy. 

His prior roles include Co-Editor for both the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and the Journal of Human Resources.

Jackson’s academic odyssey

Jackson’s educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Ethics, Politics, and Economics from Yale University, followed by a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. His academic pursuits have predominantly revolved around labor economics, public finance, and applied econometrics. 

A special emphasis of his research is on the economics of education. This includes analyzing the significance of teachers in the K-12 system, the tangible benefits of public-school spending on student outcomes, strategies to evaluate the influence on students’ socio-emotional competencies, among other relevant topics.

Over the years, Jackson’s contributions to education and public policy have not gone unnoticed. In 2020, his excellence was recognized by the National Academy of Education.

Additionally, his groundbreaking work earned him the David N Kershaw Award from the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. 

In 2022, Jackson was inducted into the esteemed American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an institution known for recognizing remarkable contributions across diverse fields.

The pivotal role of the Council of Economic Advisers, as delineated by the White House, is to serve as an integral agency within the Executive Office of the US president. Their mandate revolves around providing unbiased economic counsel to the president, shaping both domestic and international policies.
