Representatives of South Florida’s Jamaica United Relieve Association (JURA) led by its President Oliver Falloon Reid recently returned from a fact-finding trip to Jamaica resulting in the organization entering a partnership with the Cornwall Regional and Victoria Jubilee Hospitals.. Under the terms of the partnership JURA will provide the Jamaican hospitals with neonatal incubators and other medical equipment.
WPBT2 South Florida PBS has announced the launch of Haitian Voices, a community affairs program that serves to amplify major issues facing South Florida’s fast-growing Haitian population, while celebrating the community’s culture and traditions. Haitian Voices will analyze the current state of South Florida’s Haitian community, connect community members with important resources and highlight community leaders.
Thousands of Jamaicans living in South Florida wants to make the annual Christmas trip home but are being deterred by extremely high air fares this year. Potential airline passengers seeking a return ticket to Jamaica from South Florida for the holidays are faced with fares ranging from $640 to $850 despite falling oil prices.
In Sports
The Caribbean American Soccer Association (CASA) will be hosting the City of Lauderhill Youth Soccer Classic from December 15 to 18, 2016. Six teams including one each from Jamaica and Barbados, the local CASA team, Plantation, Strikers and Chevias will contest each other in two groups for the championship. Games will be played at the Lauderhill Sports Complex.

The Zika virus continues to impact South Florida. Three more locally transmitted cases of the mosquito borne virus were recently found in Miami-Dade County. The three cases brought to 228 the number of people infected in Florida. Also, the state has had 927 “travel-related” cases, involving people infected with Zika elsewhere but who brought the virus into Florida
