Jamaican women sprinters seem poised to again dominate in this year’s World Championships based on their 100 meters performance in the JAAA Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at Jamaica’s National Stadium on Friday evening.
Double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson and former to-time Olympic Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran what has been described as a “scintillating” race. Thompson just nipped Fraser-Pryce at the finish but both women clocked a 2019 world-leading 10.73.
Thompson, who started slowly got into top gear and caught the fast-starting Fraser-Pryce close to home for the second year running.
Youth sensation, 17-year-old Briana Williams was third in 10.94, to again lower her national junior record and became the first Jamaican teenager to dip below the coveted 11-second barrier.
In the men 100 meters Yohan Blake won in a time of 9.96 ahead of Tyquendo Tracey in 10.00. Rasheed Dwyer was third in 10.10 with Senoj-Jay Givans fourth in 10.13.
