IMF urges Suriname to strengthen social safety nets

In a recent development, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called upon the Surinamese government to bolster its social protection program and expedite the streamlining of the civil service.

These recommendations were conveyed by Anastasia Guscina, the IMF representative, during a press conference held on Wednesday.

Urgent call for enhanced social protection

At the heart of the IMF’s message is a plea for the Surinamese government to fortify its social protection measures.

These enhancements are deemed crucial to safeguarding the welfare of the country's citizens, particularly in times of economic uncertainty and upheaval.

Efficiency in the civil service

In addition to its appeal for improved social safety nets, the IMF has urged the Surinamese authorities to expedite the optimization of the civil service.

Guscina noted that a more streamlined and efficient public sector is seen as instrumental in facilitating the disbursement of higher salaries to government employees. This move is expected to foster greater economic stability and growth.

IMF’s engagement in Suriname

The IMF’s involvement in Suriname goes beyond mere recommendations. A delegation from the organization has been actively engaged with the Surinamese government and various stakeholders. Their discussions center on assessing the progress of the economic recovery plan currently underway, which is being financially supported by the IMF.
