Dominica receives over EC$27 million in support from China

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced on Friday that China has pledged over EC$27 million to provide budget support to Dominica, marking a significant milestone during his official visit to Beijing.

Skerrit characterized the trip as a resounding success, highlighting the warmth and consideration extended by Chinese officials towards the Dominican delegation.

Strengthening decades-long ties

During his visit, Skerrit led discussions with top Chinese officials, including a pivotal meeting with President Xi Jinping. 

Emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations over the past two decades, Skerrit and President Xi reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations. 

Skerrit lauded China as a steadfast ally of Dominica, expressing gratitude for its unwavering support.

Expanding collaboration across key sectors

Echoing President Xi’s sentiments, Skerrit underscored the breadth of cooperation between Dominica and China, spanning various sectors such as economy, education, health, and infrastructure.

He highlighted China’s willingness to explore new avenues of collaboration, particularly in emerging fields like tourism, e-commerce, and renewable energy.

Concrete steps towards progress

Skerrit outlined specific initiatives aimed at advancing Dominica’s development agenda, including the construction of crucial infrastructure projects such as roads and cultural centers. 

The pledge of financial assistance from China, coupled with strategic partnerships, is poised to drive tangible improvements in the lives of Dominican citizens.

Multifaceted agreements and memoranda

During the visit, ten agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed, encompassing diverse areas of cooperation such as agriculture, infrastructure development, and technical collaboration. 

Notably, the agreements also encompass joint efforts to promote the Belt & Road Initiative, underscoring the alignment of strategic priorities between the two nations.

Fostering economic growth through investment

Skerrit seized the opportunity to engage with potential investors, showcasing Dominica as a prime destination for sustainable business ventures. 

Collaborative discussions with Chinese counterparts explored avenues for investment in key sectors such as tourism, renewable energy, and agriculture, signaling a strong appetite for economic collaboration.

Addressing the Boao Forum for Asia, Skerrit emphasized the importance of international cooperation in tackling pressing global issues such as climate change and economic inequality. 

By fostering dialogue and collaboration on a global scale, Dominica and China aim to contribute meaningfully to addressing shared challenges.

Cultivating strategic partnerships for the future

Skerrit further highlighted the establishment of valuable links with Chinese counterparts, including discussions with officials from Shanghai on potential collaborations in business and industry.
