China’s Ambassador to Jamaica, Chen Daojiang, recently reaffirmed the robust friendship between Kingston and Beijing, emphasizing a series of initiatives designed to bolster this bilateral relationship.
During a press briefing held at the Chinese Embassy in St Andrew, Ambassador Chen unveiled several significant announcements.
Educational and community initiatives
This year, China has organized training in China for 42 Jamaicans, reflecting ongoing educational cooperation.
Further deepening community ties, the embassy will recognize local community entities that foster a friendly relationship with China.
These groups will receive the honorary designation of ‘Family of China-Jamaica Friendship’.
Moreover, individuals who have significantly contributed to the friendship between the two nations will be honored with China-Jamaica Friendship awards.
Visa policies and economic benefits
In a move to streamline international exchanges, China has introduced several visa policy adjustments. Qualified visa applicants can now bypass fingerprint submissions, enjoy a 25 per cent reduction in visa fees, and benefit from an appointment-free visa application process.
These changes are expected to facilitate smoother travel and interaction between the citizens of both countries.
Sports collaboration and cultural celebrations
Ambassador Chen also highlighted the resumption of the sports coaching cooperation program, disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 138 Jamaican athletes are set to receive 60-day intensive training in China in various sports, including swimming, gymnastics, badminton, and women’s volleyball and basketball.
Additionally, this year marks the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese in Jamaica.
To commemorate this milestone, a grand celebration is planned from July to October, celebrating the long-standing cultural connections between the two communities.
Thriving trade and future prospects
The trade relationship between Jamaica and China continues to thrive, with a trade volume of US$1.28 billion in 2023, making China Jamaica’s second-largest trading partner.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Chen expressed optimism about the future, noting potential areas for enhanced cooperation including trade and investments, new energy, agriculture and fisheries, the digital economy, and the blue economy.
These sectors present ample opportunities for mutual growth and development in the coming years.
