A Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy is facing several criminal charges in relation to a January 2021 traffic stop in Dania Beach.
Reports are that Deputy Carlos Ferrufino, 34, turned himself in on Tuesday.
Following an internal investigation, Ferrufino, is facing two counts of misdemeanor battery, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of petit theft.
According to reports, two years ago BSO investigators said Ferrufino responded to the scene of a traffic stop as a backup deputy.
It is said that he used his taser on a driver. The driver’s relatives then emerged from their home after hearing a disturbance, when one of them started recording the interaction.
Reports are that Detective Ferrufino allegedly hit the phone out of the man’s hand and tased him.
The cell phone was collected at the scene as evidence, however, investigators said Dep. Ferrufino never submitted the phone into evidence.
BSO says Dep. Ferrufino is currently suspended without pay.
Sheriff Gregory Tony said that as law enforcement officers, it is their oath to uphold the law which does not exempt them from following the law.
“There are consequences for breaking the law, even if it means bringing charges against one of our own,” he said.
“Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and I expect the highest level of professionalism from all BSO personnel,” he added.
