Jamaican Elsie Foster becomes new Mayor of Highland Park, New Jersey

Jamaica-born Elsie Foster was elected as the new Mayor of Highland Park in Middlesex County, New Jersey during a special Borough Council meeting on January 24.

Foster, who hails from Trelawny, Jamaica will be the mayor until the end of 2023.

She has been the council president and acting mayor since the beginning of the year and has replaced former Mayor, Gayle Brill Mittler.

Mittler resigned December 31.

Foster said she looks forward to working with her colleagues who believe in her abilities.

She also expressed her anticipation in working with the residents to improve the town’s affordability, sense of community, and opportunities.

The new Highland Park mayor has served several years on the Borough Council as well as on all the council’s committees.

She is also the legislative liaison to the State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission and a founding partner of JamPhil Consultants, LLC.

Foster is the president and chief executive officer of Aunt Elsie’s Homestays, which is an international student housing organization.
