Miami, FLORIDA – The Pompano Beach Cultural Center has planned a “Dyn-o-mite” night of comedy to celebrate Black History Month next February.
The next Pompano Stand-up Live! features two iconic comedians, Jimmie “JJ” Walker and Michael Winslow. Walker, who gained fame on the hit show, Good Times and Winslow, who starred in the Police Academy films, teamed up a couple of years ago for a comedy special We Are Still Here, and now they are bringing their exciting routine to Pompano Beach on Saturday, February 21 at 8 pm.
Jimmie Walker will also participate in a special interactive event, Live On The Set, on Friday, February 20 to explore the legacy of Black television.
“We are honored to bring these comedy legends to Pompano Beach,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “They called their TV special ‘one for the ages,’ and we cannot wait for them to bring down the house with their iconic brand of comedy! We are also thrilled that Jimmie is participating in Live On The Set, a candid conversation about African Americans’ significant role in television history.”
Rising from the streets of New York’s ghettos to television superstardom, Jimmie Walker personifies the great American success story. His catchphrase “Dyn-o-mite!” is part of the modern vernacular, and he became such a major celebrity in the 1970s that Time magazine named him “Comedian of the Decade.”
Michael Leslie Winslow is an American actor, beat boxer, and comedian billed as the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects” for his ability to make realistic sounds using only his voice. He is best known for his roles in all seven Police Academy films as Larvell Jones. He has also appeared in Spaceballs, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, The Love Boat, and commercials for Cadbury and GEICO.
Pompano Stand-Up Live! also features a DJ, a full bar and concessions. This event may not be appropriate for patrons under 18 years old, all patrons must have a ticket and there is a two-drink minimum.
Live on the Set is a family-friendly event that will provide a fascinating and insightful dialogue about the important legacy of Black television during Black History month.
