$14 Million School Remodeling Project Underway for Miami-Dade Schools

MIAMI, Florida – The Miami-Dade School Board recently approved the commissioning of architects and construction awards related to General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects valued at approximately $14 million.

In 2012 county voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety; and provide technology upgrades.

The following are details of the projects:

Hialeah Middle School – the proposed scope of work includes, but is not limited to new physical education shelter; repair eight existing basketball standards goals and backboards; replace rims and nets; re-surface, coat and re-stripe basketball courts; exterior and interior painting; replace selected heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; remodel selected restrooms into new ADA-compliant restrooms; replace electric water cooler (EWC) in auditorium lobby with new High-Low EWC with bottle filler; replace selected stairway guard railing at four exit stairs; refurbish auditorium seating; provide auditorium seating with aisle lighting; replace selected lighting; re-surface and re-stripe existing parking lot; and selected electrical upgrades.

$ 6.4 million (Partial GOB funding) has been allocated towards this project which is targeted to be completed in July 2022

George Washington Carver Middle School – the proposed scope of work includes, but is not limited to the remodel/renovation of selected restrooms and replacement of selected lighting; new ADA compliant restroom; replacement of entire fire alarm system; replacement of selected HVAC equipment; upgrade selected Energy Management System (EMS) equipment; remove all lockers in exterior corridors; selective exterior paint; selected kitchen equipment upgrades; selected plumbing upgrades, miscellaneous improvements throughout.

The total project allocation is $ 4.8 million and the projected is expected to be completed by March 2022.

John F. Kennedy Middle School – the proposed scope of work includes, but is not limited to new entry feature; new exterior windows/storefronts; new HVAC system and associated electrical and plumbing work; new lighting, selective new flooring and ceilings at classrooms/labs including the media center; construction of a 1- hour fire-rated corridor partition including new fire rated corridor doors and new flooring, walls and ceilings at corridor; resurfacing of basketball courts as well as other miscellaneous upgrades throughout.

Total project allocation is $ 2.8 million, with completion date set for August 2020

The remodel projects will include related repairs to civil, structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and finishes as required and in compliance with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Design Standards.
