Joint Workshop Focuses on Faith-based Sustainability

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County and the City of Miramar are partnering to host a communitywide discussion on the role of faith-based organizations in environmental stewardship and community resilience on February 27th at the Miramar Cultural Center from 9:30AM to noon. Discussion topics include the communities most pressing issues:

  • Climate change education and advocacy
  • Disaster recovery and emergency response
  • Equity and environmental justice
  • Alleviating hunger through food rescue and community gardens
  • Energy and water conservation programs

The event entitled “Environmental Stewardship and Community Resilience: Leadership by Faith-based Organizations in Sustainability” is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Those who wish to attend should RSVP to jhorwitz@broward.org.

Notable speakers include Commissioner Darline B. Riggs of the City of Miramar, Edwin Copeland of Church United, Dr. Beverly Ward from the Southeastern Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, Shawn Laser of Calvary Plantation Church, Tania Carroll of the Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Houston Cypress of Love the Everglades, and Scott Lewis of Temple Solel’s Sea Level Rise Solutions Committee.

The event is part of a series of workshops by the Sustainability Stewards of Broward, a peer-exchange program hosted by Broward County that offers networking opportunities for more than 500 local practitioners who collaborate to advance sustainability across the community. Faith-based leaders are invited to join the network and come ready to share and learn. The session will be interactive and the goal is to share resources and create new partnerships.
