Guaidó, the president of Venezuela’s congress, led nationwide protests on Jan. 23 in which he declared himself interim president and demanded the resignation of Nicolás Maduro, who was recently sworn in for a six-year term as president of Venezuela following a May 2018 election that was roundly condemned as a sham by international observers.

The United States, as well as numerous South American countries, Canada and several European nations, have recognized Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela.

“Miami-Dade County is proud to stand with the people of Venezuela and their demands for a restoration of freedom and democracy after decades of dictatorship and misrule by Maduro and Chavez,” Commissioner Diaz said.

Commissioner Diaz, whose district includes Doral, which is home to the largest concentration of Venezuelans in the United States, has sponsored several resolutions condemning Venezuela’s dictatorship.
