The City of Sunrise hosts cultural events to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The City of Sunrise is hosting a series of free events to honor the legacy of Dr. King: 

Poetry Workshop For Teens 
Saturday, January 19
Darius Daughtry – founder of the Art Prevails Project and author of the newly-published book of poetry, “And the Walls Came Tumbling” – will guide pre-registered participants through a hands-on writing workshop. Please note that this program is full! 

Free Family Film: “Black Panther” 
Saturday, January 19, at 2:00 p.m. 
Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard 
After the death of his father, Prince T’Challa ascends to the throne of the African nation of Wakanda. As both leader and superhero – Black Panther – T’Challa must govern his country and defeat a dangerous adversary. Marvel Studios’ Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o, and is rated PG. Seating is limited: Four free general admission tickets per family are available.   • “Saving the World: Everyday Heroes” Art Gallery Opening Reception at 6:00 p.m. 
    Our exhibit pays tribute to the everyday heroes of the African diaspora – many of whom impact and influence us each day – from the most notable of public figures to our neighbors. Celebrate heroes from all walks of life in this must-see showcase of artists from the community. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
  • Concert and Poetry in the Theatre at 7:00 p.m. 
    Enjoy live music – including a performance by the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble – enriched by the words of youth poets. Tickets are extremely limited and must be picked up in advance: Visit or call the Sunrise Civic Center Box Office (954-747-4646) to check availability.

Please note that City of Sunrise administrative offices – as well as the Sunrise Senior Center and the Sunrise Civic Center Box Office – will be closed on Monday, January 21, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Some Leisure Services facilities will have special operating hours:

  • Parks – Open regular hours
  • Sunrise Civic Center Aquatics Complex – Open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Sunrise Civic Center Athletic Club – Open 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Village Multipurpose Center Gymnasium – Open regular hours
  • The Bridges at Springtree Golf Club – Open regular hours
  • Sunrise Tennis Club – Open regular hours.
