The world’s oldest woman, 117-year-old Violet Moss Brown, is dead.
Sadly, Moss-Brown, died shortly after being spirited away from her home of many years by relatives as a family feud erupted over her care and treatment.
According to relatives who cared for Browne at her Duanvale, Trelawny home, she was supposed to be taken by another family member to hospital for a medical appointment on Saturday but was not taken back home.
Moss Brown, who is affectionately called Aunt V, reportedly died at the Fairview Medical Centre in Montego Bay, St James about 2:30 pm Friday.
She was 117 years old, being born on March 10, 1900.
Moss Brown became the world’s oldest human on April 15 after the passing of Italian Emma Morano, who was born on November 29, 1899.
Death leaves a bitter taste
As news of Miss V’s passing broke, social media pages went abuzz with many users condemning her relatives for removing her from her home of many years and blaming them of causing her to die of a broken heart.
A woman identified as Karen Samuel took the matriarch last weekend and had refused to bring her home. Samuels reportedly told her relatives that she was instructed by Barry Russell (Moss Brown’s son) to take her to the hospital to get her hydrated. Samuels then revealed that she was instructed by Russell to remove Brown from her home and not to reveal her whereabouts to anyone.
Not pleased with treatment
Russell, who lives in Miami, said he was not pleased with the treatment his mother was receiving at her home and he accused her grandchildren, with whom she lived, of being greedy and uncaring. He claimed his mother was alive and remained steadfast that her whereabouts would not be made known.
Family dispute
However, granddaughter Lelieth Palmer, the daughter of Moss Brown’s son, Harland Fairweather, who was the world’s oldest person with a living parent prior to his death earlier this year, said since her father died, there had been a family dispute as to who should care for Moss Brown. And that led to her being whisked away.
