Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange says women could make big impact in T20

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has put forward a proposal for the creation of a T20 cricket tournament for women in the region.

Grange concept is one similar to the format currently being played by males in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Female cricketers would benefit greatly

She argued that female cricketers in the region would benefit significantly from the exposure and experience to be gained against the background of a global viewership of more than 130 million for the CPL, which is contested by six franchise teams.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with members of defending CPL champions, Jamaica Tallawahs squad on Thursday,  Grange noted that the CPL sponsors were pleased and encouraged by the fact that the CPL, which started in 2013, provides the region’s young male cricketers, with an opportunity to advance their careers.

Expand opportunities for women cricketers in the region

Women cricketers should afforded the same opportunities she argued.

“This is my challenge to you. It’s time to expand access and opportunities for women in cricket in our region,” Grange said.
