Guyana Clips Jamaica to Clinch Caribbean Men’s Squash Title

Guyana clinched the Caribbean men’s squash championship with a thrilling 32 win over Jamaica in the finals of the 2017 Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Championships.

The games were the last of the Championships which were held in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

 

Guyana took first two sets

Things got off to a challenging start for Jamaica when National Under 19 champion, Tahjia Lumley lost 9-11, 2-11, 8-11 to Jason Ray Khalil and then Jonathan Walker was beaten 6-11, 4-11, 6-11 by the former regional junior champion, Nyron Joseph.

Jamaica rallies back

With the team facing elimination, eight-time Caribbean men’s champion Chris Binnie stepped up to the plate and gave the Jamaicans a lifeline to get the Jamaicans on the board. Binnie drubbed long-time rival, Sunil Seth, 11-7, 11-1, 11-6.

Bruce Burrowes, then beat Alex Arjoon, 11-7, 11-7, 3-11, 11-1, to level the score.

Guyana claimed victory through former Caribbean champion Richard Chin who defeated Julian Morrison 11-9, 12-10, 11-6.

The second place finish puts Jamaica in a good position to qualify for 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games which are scheduled for August 3 – 19, 2018 in Barranquilla, Colombia.
