Jamaica’s proud tradition of honoring its sporting legends continues this year, as three of the island’s most celebrated athletes — Yohan Blake, Rovman Powell, and Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner — have been named among the distinguished recipients of National Honours and Awards for 2025.
They join a select group of 114 Jamaicans whose contributions to the nation were formally recognized on August 6, marking the country’s annual Independence Day celebrations.
Yohan Blake — sprinting star and philanthropist
Blake, the 2011 World 100-metre champion and one of the fastest men in history, has been appointed Member of the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD). The accolade salutes not only his illustrious career on the track — where he has inspired millions worldwide — but also his ongoing philanthropic work, championing youth and community development.
He is among 35 individuals to receive the Commander-class honour this year, a recognition of excellence and impact that extends beyond sporting achievement.
Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner — A Reggae Boy for the ages
Known for his composure, vision, and leadership on the pitch, Gardner remains an enduring symbol of Jamaica’s footballing golden moment: qualification for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Appointed Member of the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD), he is being honored for his contribution to sports, particularly football, where his name is etched into the island’s history books.
Rovman Powell — power-hitter and leader
Dynamic and fearless, Powell has been a fixture of both Jamaica’s cricket program and the West Indies T20 side, even captaining the regional team on the international stage. His appointment as Member of the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) celebrates his service to the sport and his role in representing the Caribbean on the world stage.
He joins Gardner and 41 other individuals receiving the Officer-class honour this year.
National recognition on Heroes Day
All three honourees will receive their insignias at the National Honours and Awards Ceremony on National Heroes Day, October 20. The celebration will spotlight their dedication, excellence, and service — qualities that embody the spirit of Jamaica’s independence and inspire future generations of athletes.
