Haitian Presidency denies arrest of Advisor Smith Augustin by Dominican authorities

The Haitian government is pushing back against reports that Presidential Advisor Smith Augustin was arrested and detained by Dominican authorities after allegedly entering the country under false pretenses earlier this month.

In a statement issued this week, the Office of the President confirmed that Augustin crossed into Dominican territory on a personal trip, despite the ongoing temporary border closure between the two countries. The presidency insists that the journey was conducted in accordance with existing diplomatic norms and with the prior knowledge of Dominican authorities, who allowed his entry based on what officials described as “good neighborly relations.”

However, conflicting accounts have surfaced regarding the incident, which took place on August 1 in the border town of Dajabón. Haitian human rights advocate Pierre Espérance told the newspaper Gran Boulva, during an appearance on Radio Caraïbes, that Augustin was detained for several hours after Dominican immigration officers discovered he had lied about his travel destination. According to Espérance, Augustin was in the country to finalize the purchase of an apartment.

The presidential statement dismissed such claims as “rumors and unfounded allegations” spread by certain political figures and media outlets. It stressed that Augustin was neither arrested nor formally questioned, and described the incident as being blown out of proportion amid an already volatile political climate.

“This disinformation,” the statement read, “is aimed at sowing confusion and mistrust at a time when national unity is essential.”

Sources close to the situation say it took behind-the-scenes diplomatic intervention, including from members of Haiti’s transitional Presidential Council, to secure Augustin’s release — though the Presidency has not confirmed this detail.

The incident has sparked debate about the conduct of Haitian officials and the transparency of their actions, especially amid heightened scrutiny over cross-border relations and political accountability during the country’s fragile transition period.
